Boolean use....

Here is the question I chose to use:

What are our basic first amendment rights?

This is the way I would do a boolean search on this question:

basic and " first amendment" and right*

This is a great way to search for information but I have a feeling I will not remember how to search this way. Is there some sort of quick reference I could use to remember?

It is a bit awkward but a good method for breaking down questions into their key components. I think the word "basic" could be problematic but maybe it should be "basic first amendment" as a phrase so they are combined instead of separate? I would suggest trying the combining of terms with AND and OR to focus your search.
